How does television take viewers out of this world?

I suppose television (or in this case the TV stations which make the programs) has the capability of taking viewers out of this world by creating a culture or habits or even a life style that attract their attention. They are so attracted that they are carried away by what they see on TV or even worse, obsessed by it. Eventually, they are out of this world of reality as they don't realise that they follow or imitate the things they see on TV. They even feel that they are apart of or have become what they have seen on TV.
